I adore prints, colors and woven fabric.I have a wardrobe with many pattens though solids make up the majority of my clothing. Be fearless and try out patterns for a fresh look. Remember though that bold patterns can become outdated more quickly then others or become tiresome after awhile. I’ll recommend some prints that have staying power. Keeping somewhat classic with your wardrobe while mixing it up with prints on the accessory level or a small purchase can add spark to your wardrobe.
These next images are taken from the book pictured here titled: Collier and Campbell Archives; 50 years of Patterns. They are used to illustrate a point about pattern. The brilliant yellow color may seem bolder dated but the amazing paisley print scarf , from Liberty of London, has staying power. It is also on trend again because enough time has passed from it’s inception in 1968. Paisley’s small,detailed repeating print has always been held in high regard by me; I’ve not stopped wearing my paisley scarf since I got it in 1974.
The next pattern is very bold in design less interesting for a garment due to the pattern size and faint colors. Titled Caprice, it is pleasant though feels dated and has only been around since1993. Possibly not enough time has past for us to ‘recycle the look’? The next image is a Prada dress from a book titled: Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations,. It is interviews of both Elsa Schiaparelli and Mucci Prada, years apart in time to even have a conversation, but with design images strikingly parallel. This dress is folded and dyed ( that would be,tie-dyed in the layperson’s terms) All the rage again though this piece was produced by Prada in Spring, 2000.
I am so happy to have a love of pattern in my wardrobe! The short sleeved graphic dot print blouse is a bit trendy. As a sure bet, look for classic prints such as this blouse with white polka dot on a dark (navy) background has a long ‘shelf-life’; continuing to be a sure style choice.Scarves are a fabulous way to add patterns to an otherwise solid collection of clothing. We have seen the resurgence of stripes, again a pattern I hold dear, yet can be unflattering to wear on some body types. Mixing patterns is on trend this season so try some small prints in similar colors for a spicy wardrobe mix
